Most people know they “should” eat more vegetables or cook more at home. The gap is rarely knowledge — it is doing it consistently. Habit-based coaching closes that gap by focusing on small, repeatable actions instead of big plans.
Why big plans fail
A complete overhaul asks clients to change many behaviours at once, often relying on motivation that fades within days. When one part breaks, the whole plan feels broken. Small habits are easier to start, easier to repeat and easier to restart after a bad day.
How habits form
Research on habit formation shows that behaviours become more automatic when they are repeated in a consistent context. In a well-known study from University College London, the time it took for a new daily behaviour to feel automatic varied widely between people — from a few weeks to many months. The lesson for coaches: consistency matters more than speed, and missing a day occasionally does not ruin progress.
Choosing the right habit
- Small: “eat one portion of vegetables at lunch”, not “eat perfectly”.
- Specific: clear about what, when and where.
- Linked: attached to something the client already does every day.
- Chosen by the client: people commit to actions they picked themselves.
A simple coaching structure
- Agree on one habit for the next one to two weeks.
- Ask the client to rate their confidence from 1 to 10. If it is below 7, make the habit smaller.
- Plan for obstacles: “What might get in the way, and what will you do then?”
- Track it simply — a tick on a calendar is enough.
- Review, celebrate progress and decide: keep, adjust or add the next habit.
Handling setbacks
Setbacks are information, not failure. Ask what happened, what helped on the good days and what one change would make next week easier. A client who learns to restart quickly is building the most valuable habit of all.
Coaching tip: the “confidence scale” question is one of the most useful tools you have. It turns vague goals into actions the client truly believes they can do.
